Glasgow-based construction firm, City Building, has met its match in Drumchapel United Ladies Football Club as both organisations outline their hopes to inspire young girls in the local community.
Boasting three members of Drumchapel United within its workforce; Roberta Kinnon, Marie Dabek and Rachel Kerr; City Building has announced its sponsorship of the club as part of its growing commitment to grow the number of opportunities open to women across Glasgow.
Alongside City Building’s active encouragement of women into construction through apprenticeships, Drumchapel United hosts a football academy for primary school girls hoping to learn the game. The mutual ambition to recruit women of all ages into historically male-dominated arenas will be solidified through the partnership.
Alan Burns, Executive Director of City Building, pointed to the shared values of both organisations, saying:
“It is an honour to announce our sponsorship of Drumchapel United Ladies Football Club. With Roberta, Marie and Rachel amongst our ranks, I believe women in construction are strong role models to young people looking for their right career path.
“City Building is proud to be a progressive force within the construction industry, and we vow to do all we can to ensure young women are given the same opportunities as their male counterparts. There is a lot that construction can offer women as an industry, and football as a sport is much the same in that sense. This partnership is a clear commitment to these values.”
City Building recently announced its new working group, Gender Equality in the Workplace, in order to promote female leadership within the firm. While the construction firm recruits 10 times the industry standard of female apprentices, the working group will work to improve the retention and progression of female employees.
Roberta Kinnon, apprentice plumber at City Building and member of Drumchapel United Ladies Football Club, said:
“I’m really proud to be part of both City Building and Drumchapel United as two organisations which support women and young girls. I feel I have learned a lot more than solely plumbing and penalties from each organisation, and I would love to inspire other young girls to consider the same path.”
