Tollcross International Swimming Centre

Every few months, City Building’s Mechanical Services and Maintenance team quietly go about performing one of Scottish swimming’s most important jobs – ensuring the mechanical plant at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre runs like clockwork.

As a national arena, the facility hosts many high-profile events, including the Commonwealth Games, and the team must meet exacting specifications to ensure these can go ahead.

As well as regulating the temperature of the pools, City Building’s experts are also responsible for maintaining the ambient temperature outside it, which must be exactly 1°C above the water temperature to prevent condensation.

They also carry out all other mechanical maintenance, including gas, heating, air conditioning, ventilation, and sprinkler systems. The team takes great pride in their behind-the-scenes role at the world-class venue, which has hosted some of the greatest athletes in the sport.

Emirates Arena

There can’t be many jobs where people take pride in no one noticing their work, but City Building’s Mechanical Services and Maintenance team are happiest when their labours go unnoticed. This is especially true at the Emirates Arena, where they carry out all mechanical maintenance, including gas, heating, air conditioning, sprinkler systems and charge units.

In addition to undertaking annual services, the team also return every six months to conduct other maintenance – including cleaning all 2,000 filters in the centre’s air handling units.

The facility includes the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, which hosts major international events, including the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The team’s services play a leading role in regulating the velodrome’s temperature and protecting its 250m Serbian pine track. All work takes place out of hours to minimise disruption to the stadium, which is open all year round, with each maintenance sprint taking around two weeks and involving up to five experts.

Additional maintenance takes place before any big events, and the team know they have done a good job when there is no mechanical reason to delay or cancel them.
