The Thistle – Delivering the UK’s first safer drug consumption facility

The Thistle, which opened in January 2025, is the UK’s first safer drug consumption facility, and is designed to save lives and support recovery.

In just seven months, City Building transformed an existing location in Glasgow’s Calton area into a state-of-the-art centre featuring injection booths, health consultation rooms, a recovery lounge, and aftercare space.

Unique challenges included strict access control to manage movement through the building, evolving designs, complex ventilation, and the incorporation of best practice from similar international facilities.

Working collaboratively with a wide range of partners, City Building’s construction services team delivered a timely and welcoming environment, which is regarded as a turning point in public health and harm-reduction support in Glasgow and the UK.

High Street restoration work

City Building carried out extensive restoration of historic tenement blocks on Glasgow’s renowned High Street.

The programme delivered external stonework repairs and complex roof refurbishments across two distinct phases.

Phase one, at 252 High Street, presented significant challenges due to the building’s complex roof shape, dormers, toilets, and distinctive cupola.

Works included stone repair, renewal, and repointing.

Phase two at 235 High Street followed similar repair principles, with fewer structural complexities.

Notably, a listed mural – believed to depict a young St Mungo – required careful preservation, including temporary protection and coordination with Glasgow City Council for restoration. Across both phases, between 16 and 20 operatives were involved, highlighting the scale and detail of the project.
