Glasgow is world renowned for our heritage buildings across the city. We play a key role in the future sustainability of these buildings.
Our specialist construction and investment teams work hard to ensure the skills are available to protect our heritage buildings for future generations.
This includes the delivery of skills required to deliver the ambitious goals towards achieving net zero in Glasgow by the retrofit of renewable technologies.
Our dedicated team of experts who can manage and maintain these beautiful buildings work closely with colleagues in Glasgow City Council to identify a range of support to ensure they are maintained to the highest standards.
Our recent work includes:
Provand’s Lordship, Glasgow’s oldest surviving house, dates back to 1471 and holds A-listed status as a building of exceptional historical importance. City Building carried out extensive external restoration works to safeguard its unique heritage while sensitively introducing essential modern systems.
The project demanded a meticulous balance between preserving the building’s medieval character and meeting contemporary safety and sustainability standards. Key upgrades included the installation of future-proof systems such as fire alarms and essential lighting, ensuring the property remains secure and functional without compromising its authenticity.
City Building’s team combined detailed historical research with expert craftsmanship, employing both traditional and modern restoration techniques. This thoughtful approach ensured that the structure’s original features were carefully maintained, while necessary enhancements were seamlessly integrated.
The result is a beautifully restored landmark that stands as a testament to Glasgow’s rich architectural history. Through this project, City Building has ensured that Provand’s Lordship will continue to inspire and educate future generations of Glaswegians and visitors alike.

Linn Crematorium is housed within a distinctive mid-20th century building in the south of Glasgow.
City Building undertook a comprehensive two-phase refurbishment of the facility from July 2023 to May 2024, delivering full mechanical and electrical upgrades, restoring heritage features, and improving facilities for staff and visitors.
City Building’s team worked at pace to complete St. Mungo’s chapel and allow funeral services to return before adopting out-of-hours working patterns while renovating the St. Giles chapel next door, ensuring dignity for mourners.
Specialist contractors restored original pews and parquet floors, and controlled removal of asbestos materials was carried out.
City Building’s sensitivity and care has preserved a vital civic venue for generations to come while respecting the emotional significance it holds for so many.
