Setting the Right Example
At City Building, where we are “Building a Sustainable Future,” we have a unique social ethos, providing training and employment to a diverse range of people from the communities we serve.
As a result of our long-standing links with the local communities in which we operate, we continue to provide a range of training and life skills opportunities to both employees and the citizens of Glasgow. We strongly believe in opportunities for all and have developed a number of initiatives to ensure that we support the wider community, particularly in terms of employment and training opportunities.
We have worked with Strathclyde Police to address the issue of gang culture in the south west of Glasgow and successfully recruited four young people involved in anti-social gang activity onto our mainstream apprenticeship programme. All four are succeeding with their apprenticeships and have now left gang culture behind them.
We engage with local communities on a regular basis and add value to community facilities, local groups and events to enable them to promote community benefits within their area.
Our commitment to communities also spreads beyond Scotland. Over the last few years, we have sent a team of skilled tradesmen to Malawi to build a prosthetics clinic and an AIDS testing clinic. Materials were donated by local suppliers and both projects were successfully completed on time. In September 2010, the same team travelled to Malawi, this time to build a much-needed extension to a prosthetics clinic.
Apprentice Community Projects
We have a long history of working with local communities to add value to community facilities, local groups and events to enable them to deliver community benefits within their area. As part of our apprentices’ training, they are encouraged to get involved with local community activities and to contribute to community initiatives.
