City Building (Glasgow) LLP

Events

Since the start of 2009, City Building have welcomed visitors from across the UK, including Local Councillors and Members of Parliament to highlight the full range of services City Building have to offer and to show our continued commitment to delivering a high standard of training and employment opportunities to the residents of Glasgow and beyond.

City Building also attend various conferences throughout the year and use these to communicate our commitment to delivering such a diverse range of services and to improving the communities across Glasgow.

Journey of the Stone

On Saturday 29th August 2009, Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, presented the “Sconestone” to the first “Keeper of the Stone”, the Rev. Neil Galbraith, Chief Executive Officer of Glasgow the Caring City.

On Wednesday 2nd September 2009, City Building staff welcomed the Rev. Neil Galbraith and the “Sconestone” to their Headquarters in Darnick Street.

Over the days, months and years that stretch to infinity the wish is simple – that the “Sconestone” will pass from hand to hand, keeper to keeper, each pledging to do an act of kindness.  Many City Building employees took the pledge.   Indeed £500 raised by our employees was presented to the Rev. Neil Galbraith who pledged that it would be used to eradicate Child Poverty in our City.

Skills Academy Visit

Tavish Scott, MSP, Leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats visited the Skills Academy on 3rd February to meet staff and apprentices.

He indicated that he was keen to find out more information on we were doing at City Building (Glasgow) LLP to continue to raise the skills of our workforce. He said he “found the visit a valuable opportunity to learn more about City Building apprentices”. Indeed he even used footage of the visit for his own Television Broadcast, which confirms how informative he found his visit.

CIH Event

City Building attended the Chartered Institute of Housing week long event at the beginning of March at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. City Building showcased their impressive 42m² stand and received a prize for the best stand in the large stand category.

The event gave City Building the opportunity to meet with housing professionals across Scotland and increase the awareness of City Building’s brand and raise the company profile.

Visit to Queenslie Training Centre

Queenslie Training Centre recently welcomed Margaret Curran MSP for Glasgow Baillieston and John Park MSP Shadow Minister for Economy and Skills to see first hand the excellent training facilities City Building can offer.
Both MSP’s talked at length to the apprentices about their experiences so far and their future ambitions.

Margaret Curran said of the training centre ‘it is a great example of what can be done to help young women to gain a trade, earn a good income and develop skills that will enable them to make a real contribution to the City of Glasgow.’

Scottish Labour Conference

City Building recently exhibited at the Scottish Labour Conference in Perth. The event was well attended and the company received several enquiries from interested parties. A number of politicians visited the stand to speak to staff about the work undertaken by City Building, including Iain Gray, Sarah Boyack,  Jack McConnell, Andy Ingram, Jim Murphy, Lewis McDonald, Michael McMahon, James Purnell and the Prime Minister’s wife, Sarah Brown.

Old Firm Legends launch Apprentice Intake

Ally McCoist and Neil Lennon visited the Skills Academy to launch the intake of 47 new apprentices which are being funded by Glasgow Community Planning Partnership.

Councillors and the Chairs from each of the local Community Planning Partnership areas were on hand to meet the apprentices recruited from their areas. Councillor Jim Coleman said “It is more important than ever that we provide our youngsters with the best training possible as they start their working lives.  It is our commitment to provide apprenticeships for 2,000 youngsters in the run up to the Commonwealth Games and facilities like the Skills Academy ensure that training is delivered at the highest level”.

Visit to RSBi

RSBi received a visit from Catherine Stihler, MEP. After a tour of the factory and a chance to speak to some of the employees, Mrs Stihler met with CBG Directorate along with Paul Martin MP and Bailie Todd. Discussion took place regarding Article 19 and Mrs Stihler agreed to raise the issue at future meetings.

Gordon Brown Visits Skills Academy

City Building were delighted to receive a visit from the Prime Minister on 23rd January.  The Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown visited the Skills Academy to see for himself the facilities available to apprentices and appeared impressed with what he saw. The Prime Minister commented “It is great to be at City Building’s Construction Skills Academy today. I have seen first hand how this excellent project can equip young people to seize new opportunities in the future and to help Scotland emerge from this global downturn stronger than ever”.

The Prime Minister, along with Glasgow Council Leader Steven Purcell and the Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy, MP, spent a lengthy period talking to Lecturers and Apprentices about their experiences and saw for himself the excellent facilities available. City Building were given the opportunity to bring along some of the Private and Public Sector partners we work with who were  given the opportunity to speak directly to The Prime Minister.

In welcoming the Prime Minister to the Skills Academy, Willie Docherty said “We are delighted the Prime Minister has come to see for himself our apprenticeship scheme. It is important that we have skilled people available for the future growth of the construction industry”.
