Awards Give Young Apprentices a Lift
GLASGOW—June 9, 2009
Two young Scottish apprentices have won awards in lift engineering at a recent ceremony in East Kilbride.
Kevin Gough (16) from Uddingston and Jordan Argue (17) from Robroyston, who are both apprentices at City Building (Glasgow), were recognised at the event which took place in East Kilbride.
As part of their apprenticeships, Kevin and Jordan attended a 20 - week course in hydraulics and engineering at the East Kilbride and District Engineering Group Training Association.
Kevin won The Weir Power and Industrial Award for Fitting Skills - a much sought after title - in recognition of the skills he consistently demonstrated throughout the course.
Jordan Argue was part of ‘Team Reliance’, which triumphed in the team award category. The task set was to design and deliver a project for under £10 from a brief that was provided by the judges.
Kevin Gough was delighted with his award. “The course was both challenging and fun and to have won this award makes it even more worthwhile. I’m now looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and to putting the skills I have learned to use.”
Jordan added; “Winning the team award has improved an already great experience. We learned the importance of being able to work as part of a team as well as independently and I made some good friends along the way too.”
Willie Docherty, managing director at City Building (Glasgow) praised the apprentices. He said; “Both Kevin and Jordan should be very proud of what they have achieved. Their success is testament to their efforts and skills and I hope this recognition will encourage more young people to look into the opportunities that apprenticeships at City Building offer.”
