Ethnic Minority Communities Targeted For Apprenticeship Opportunities in the Construction Industry
GLASGOW—June 19, 2007
City Building, one of the UK’s largest construction companies, based in Glasgow employing over 2000 people, is developing its ‘Construction for All’ philosophy by launching a marketing initiative aimed at Scotland’s minority ethnic communities.
The new marketing initiative involves distribution of 50,000 leaflets targeted directly at minority ethnic groups. For example, 30,000 leaflets were distributed at last weekend’s Glasgow Mela Festival in Kelvingrove Park. A further 20,000 leaflets will be circulated at various events throughout the summer including yesterday’s Young Scottish Muslim “Looking Forward ‘07″ conference at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall part sponsored by City Building.
The ‘Construction for All’ initiative in addition to targeting minority ethnic communities has also developed a highly successful programme aimed at single parents. The scheme has received backing from entrepreneur Satty Singh and Old Firm stars Barry Ferguson, Kris Boyd, Neil Lennon and Paul Hartley.
Following City Building’s launch of ‘Construction for All’ on 10th April 2007, City Building has received twice as many applications for its apprenticeship programme than last year, with a proportionate increase in applicants from minority ethnic communities.
The ‘Construction for All’ initiative aims to stimulate interest in careers in construction with groups of society who have traditionally been underrepresented in the industry. City Building’s commitment is to make construction opportunities available to all and to ensure that barriers, real or perceived, are broken down so that apprenticeship opportunities can be accessed across Scotland’s increasingly diverse population.
