Gordon Brown Visits Glasgow’s Construction Skills Academy

GLASGOW - January 23, 2009

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Gordon Brown, MP arrived in Glasgow today to visit City Building’s newly launched Skills Academy.

Situated in the Gorbals area of the City, the Skills Academy will play a crucial role in the training of young people for a future in the construction industry.

The Prime Minister commented: “It is great to be at the City Building Construction Skills Academy in Glasgow today. I have seen first hand how this excellent project can equip young people to seize new opportunities in the future and so help Scotland emerge from this global downturn stronger than before.”

Willie Docherty, Managing Director, City Building (Glasgow) LLP in welcoming the Prime Minister to City Building said “We are delighted the Prime Minister has come to see for himself our apprenticeship scheme. It is important that we have skilled people available for the future growth of the construction industry.”

The Skills Academy is aimed at teaching youngsters in Scotland full craft skills as well as offering construction-related training programmes. The apprentices will serve a four-year apprenticeship in joinery, painting and plumbing.
